Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) has addressed rumours circulating on social media regarding a purported increase in missing children in Dhaka and Chattogram over the past two days, terming them baseless.
CMP Additional Commissioner Abdul Mannad clarified that they have engaged with administrators of four Facebook groups, urging them to verify reports of missing persons through general diaries (GD) before posting. He made these remarks during a press conference at Dampara Police Line.
Social media had been abuzz since Saturday morning with claims that 35 children had gone missing within 48 hours in the two cities, causing widespread panic. However, police have debunked these claims, emphasising that reports of missing persons are routine and many individuals return home shortly after.
"Of the 17 reported missing in Chattagram between June 1 and 6, eleven have already returned home. Additionally, six cases involve individuals who have eloped, and efforts are underway to locate them," Mannad stated.
The Police Headquarters (PHQ) issued a statement on Sunday addressing recent social media posts about missing children, categorising them as mere rumours. They cautioned against spreading misinformation and assured that legal action would be taken against those who do so.
