Heavy rainfall has caused extensive waterlogging in many areas of Mymensingh city.
Houses, shops, and markets have been inundated in water due to incessant rain starting from Thursday evening.
Many people have spent sleepless nights as rainwater has entered their homes.
400mm of rain has been registered in Mymensingh in last 24 hours breaking last hundred year’s record.
Engineer Md. Mojibur Rahmant suggests to build a ‘U drain’ underneath the road from Vatikashor Borobari to Brahmaputra River via Kewatkhali to resolve waterlogging in Mymensingh especially for the drainage of the low areas of the 19 wards. Effective measures should take to build an improved and planned drainage system for draining the water in that area, he opined.
Rainwater got enter into power plants, government hospitals, houses, and shops, and cost damage of different goods as heavy rain continued from Thursday (October 5) to Friday morning. Meanwhile, the city was plunged into darkness for 13 hours without electricity since Thursday evening and caused various sufferings as the Kewatkhali Control Room of the Electricity Department was submerged in water. In the meantime, Mymensingh City Corporation (MCC) Mayor Md. Ikramul Haque Titu said that a team is working to make necessary arrangements to remove the water quickly.
Residents of Mymensingh said that although it has been raining intermittently for the past few days, it turned into continuous rain on Wednesday night. In this, drains overflowed with waters and then overflowed the road and entered houses and shops. Also, water has entered the ground floor of the staff quarters in the Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. The hospital's Deputy Director Dr. Zakiul Islam said that medical services have been kept running with generators due to load-shedding.
Power Development Board (PDB) Chief Engineer Md. Rafiqul Islam said that electricity has been cut in 50% of the city since 9:30 on Thursday night due to the submergence of Kewatkhali control room. Although the fire brigade was informed, the electricity could not be resupplied at night as the water did not subside sufficiently. Later on Friday at 10:35 AM, the power was restored.
Railway sources said the signal point is not working as the track is submerged in water. As a result, train movement on Dhaka-Mymensingh railway is disrupted. Railway Transport Department Inspector Md. Shahinur Islam said that the trains are
passing slowly as the line is submerged in water.
“The 400mm of rainfall in last 24 hours has created terrible condition of remembrance.
It is not just a rain but a natural disaster. Water is coming down at a slow pace due to waterlogging in the lower areas. The water has started to recede in some places as the rain has eased a bit. Meanwhile, a team has been formed to ensure quick removal of water. People are suffering temporarily due to heavy rains”, said the Mayor of MCC.
