CID to open forensic lab in Rajshahi

A state-of-the-art forensic laboratory is going to be launched by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Rajshahi for identifying criminals, detecting crimes and examining evidences. At Rajshahi police lines, the laboratory has been set up in a four-storey building. Mohammad Javed Patwary, an inspector general of police, is expected to inaugurate it on 3 February.

According to CID sources, such lab will keep a significant role to explore important evidences to solve different criminal cases.

“Earlier, to get laboratory reports, it took a long time and delayed investigations and sometimes evidence would be damaged,” also said CID officials adding that the lab will accelerate investigations in the region. Abdur Rahim, an additional police super in Rajshahi CID’s forensic department said, sending evidences requires time from one division to another, leading to delays. The people do not need to go to Dhaka anymore to get laboratory reports and necessary information. The lab in Rajshahi and Rangpur regions will reduce hassle.

However, led by an additional superintendent of police, a 40-member team will be deployed at the lab in initially in Rajshahi.

The CID officials in Rajshahi office said, the lab is competent to carry out any chemical examination and documentation as it is well-equipped with sophisticated equipment of international standards and highly specialized, told The Bangladesh Post.  The officials further said that to examine arms and explosives, there would be “ballistics section” and also separate sections to inspect forgeries and counterfeit notes.

Besides, to collect evidence from the scene of crime, a special crime scene unit has been added to the lab. There will also be finger and foot print sections and a handwriting analysis and photography sections to match prints collected and accelerate investigations, the CID officials said.
