Flower growers including un-employed educated youths in Sadar, Damurhuda and Jibannagar upazilas of Chuadanga district are satisfied to get fair prices of their produces this month. Different businessmen and others are going to flower’ growers to buy flowers on the eve of Valentine day, Mother Language Day and other programmes.
According to the Agriculture Extension Department (DAE), a total of 66 hectares of land have been broght under flower cultivation in 3 upazilas of the district. Upazila-wise break-ups -- are-5 hectares of land in sadar upazila, 1 hectare in Damurhuda upazila and 60 hectares of land in Jibannagar upazila. Some students and housewives are cultivating flowers on their homestead fallen land.
It is learnt, at present about 300 growers have engaged to cultivate flowers. Most of them are un-employed educated youths. They are becoming self-reliant and bearing their family expenses through cultivating flowers.
February is the business month of the year to the flower growers. Different programmes are arranged in this month, so demands of flowers are to increase. Wholesalers and businessmen are going to flower growers for buying flowers. For this reason, commercial and marginal flower growers are dreaming to make profits.
While visiting different villages of the district, this correspondent found that growers are passing their days taking care of their flower fields. They are working on the fields to grow best sizes of flowers for attracting their customers and flower lovers.
It may be mentioned here that various flowers like rose, gladiolus, marigold, rojonigondha have been cultivated on the land. So, many flower lovers are rushing there for purchasing flowers from the beginning of February.
Jalaluddin, a flower grower of village Daulatdiar in sadar upazila of the district told this correspondent that he earns about Tk 2,00,000 investing only Tk 70,000 per bigha, Tk. 3,00,000 by spending Tk. 1,50,000 per bigha mollika cultivation, Tk 1,00,000 by spending Tk.50,000 per bigha rojonigondha cultivation.
Jahidul Islam Rana, a flower businessman in Chuadanga town said, he is selling rose per piece between Tk. 40 and 50, Rojonigondha per piece at Tk 15.
He also stated that bouquet is being sold at Tk. 600 to 7,000 according to its size.
Mostafizur Rahman, Sub-Assistant Agriculture Officer, said flowers have been cultivated in several areas for a long time. All types of advice are provided to the growers for producing best type of flowers targeting fair prices.
Bevash Chandra Saha, Deputy Director of Department of Agriculture Extension, said, the soil of this region is very suitable for flowers. So, farmers and educated unemployed youths are being encouraged to cultivate flowers in the areas.
