Child ies after taking date-expired saline; four hospitalized

A child reportedly died and four others, including the mother of the children, were hospitalized after taking a Sharbat made with date expired saline in Sirajganj's Belkuchi upazila on Monday.

The incident took place at Bailgachhi village under Belkuchi upazila at night.

The deceased Jimha Khatun was the daughter of Qayyum Uddin, a resident of that village. The sicks are --- Qayyum Uddin's wife Parveen Khatun, their daughters Riya, Nuri and Qayyum Uddin's niece Mithila.

Among them, mother Parveen and daughter Riya are in critical condition.

It was learnt that after fasting all day they broke their fasting by drinking saline and fell ill.

According to the relatives of the deceased, Parveen Khatun was fasting all day on Monday, the day after Shab-e-Barat. In the evening during Iftar she drank ‘Sarbat’ made of Orsaline. Meanwhile, her three children Jimha, Riya, Nuri and niece Mithila also drank the Sharbat.

After consuming it, everyone fell ill. Later, when they were taken to a local clinic in Belkuchi, the doctor referred them to Sirajganj. Jimha died after being taken there.

Sirajganj Bangmata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib General Hospital emergency department's Dr Faisal Hossain said According to locals, they got sick after eating saline. They have been sent to Bogura Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital for better treatment.
