A child has died and two others, including the child’s mother, were injured after the car of the deputy commissioner (DC) crashed into a motorcycle at Ramu in Cox’s Bazar on Thursday.
The incident took place in Kaimmyarghona area under South Mithachari Union on the Shaheed ATM Jafar Alam Arakan Road at about 9:30am on Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Mohammad Tanzim, two-year old son of Mohammad Shaheen from Sader Para in the union.
The child’s mother, 32-year-old Rubina Akhtar, and the motorcycle driver were injured in the accident. The driver’s name and identity have yet to be confirmed.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mohammad Salahuddin said he had been taking his car to Ukhiya in the morning for administrative work when it crashed into a motorcycle speeding in the opposite direction.
“The motorcycle was battered and thrown onto a passing mother and her son. The mother and son were injured in the accident,” said the DC.
“I got out of the car and rescued them with the help of locals. We then rushed them to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital. The doctor at the hospital declared the child dead,” he said.
He further said that the motorcycle involved in the road crash was to the right of our car. But, suddenly, the motorcycle swerved to the left at reckless speed, colliding with our car. This is what led to the unfortunate incident, he added.
The administration will provide all possible support to the families of the dead and the injured, the deputy commissioner said.
Md Ashiqur Rahman, resident medical officer at Cox’s Bazar District Sadar Hospital, said that Rubina has been sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment as her condition is critical.
Tanzim’s body has been kept at the hospital’s morgue.
