The farmers of Chatmohar Upazila expressed satisfaction over a acceptable price and the bumper production of wheat in the upazila. Wheat farmers of the Upazila are earning nearly Tk 10,000 profit from the wheat produced in a bigha of land during the current harvesting season.
According to Upazila Agriculture Office sources, the target of cultivation of wheat was fixed at 3,550 hectares of land this year but the actual cultivation of the crop was on 3,710 hectares which was 240 hectares more than the target. The average production of wheat was 3. 84 metric tonnes per hectare of land.
Wheat farmer Bokul Hossain of Ramnagar village informed, it cost him about Tk 7,000 for the cultivation including the cost of ploughing land, seed, fertiliser, irrigation, weeding, use of insecticides and the harvesting cost in a bigha of land. The production of wheat was 10 to 11 maunds from one bigha of land. At present rate per maund of wheat is being sold at Tk 1,600 and the farmers are earning nearly Tk 10,000 profit from the harvested Wheat of one bigha of land.
Another wheat farmer Rezaul Karim informed that the total cost was Tk 8,000 to cultivate wheat in a bigha of land. He harvested 11.5 maunds of wheat from a bigha of land. The market price of which is nearly Tk 19,000. He further mentioned, farmers earned more than Tk 10,000 from harvested wheat from a bigha of land. But, the share-croppers failed to earn so much profit, he added.
Masum Billah, Upazila Agriculture Officer informed that in Chatmohar BARI-30, BARI-32, BARI-33, WMRI-1, WMRI-2 and WMRI-3 varieties of wheat is produced. The climate was suitable for wheat production this year. A total of 14,264 metric tonnes of wheat have been produced at Chatmohar Upazila this year.
