It was slightly cold in the Bengali month of Kartik this year. Now with the arrival of Bengali month Agrahayon, the weather has started to get quite chilly across the country already.
Although Bengali months of Poush and Magh are marked as the weather of winter, due to the change of seasons, it has already started to get cold although winter has not arrived yet.
This early arrival of winter has increased the busyness of the artisans making quilt in Chatmohar upazila of Pabna.
It has been found out that quilts are made in different haat bazaars including Thana Bazar, Baluchar and Natun Bazar of Chatmohar Municipal area.
The shop owners take the order and make the quilts with the artisans for the users. Hundreds of artisans are making a living by making quilts in the area.
Mubarak Hossain of Chhotaguakhra village of the upazila trades in quilts in the new market area of Chatmohar. He said that at present the work of making quilts has increased. The quilts are Shimul cotton or garments factory’s discarded components, Jhut.
Shimul cotton is being sold at Tk 300 to 350 per kg while, Jhut are being sold at a price of Tk 50 to 80 per kg. He gets orders for making eight or nine quilts every day. It costs Tk 2,200 to 2,500 to make a quilt of Shimul cotton and Tk 900 to 1000 to make a quilt with garment’s Jhut.
Saheb Ali, Abu Jafar and Jahangir Alam of Baoi Hat village have been making quilts in Chatmohar for a long time. They get more quilts’ orders in November-December. The quilt makers said that they have to work from 6 am to 8 pm every day due to their busy schedule.
A quilt requires 5 kg to 6 kg of cotton. They get a wage of Tk 150 to 200 for making a quilt. In most cases, two artisans work together on a quilt.
By doing this, they earn Tk 600 to 700 every day, with which they support their family members.
