Police have charged Mohammad Ziauddin, also known as Rufi, with inciting the suicide of actress Humaira Nusrat Himu.
On Monday, Sub-Inspector Sabbir Hossain of Uttara West police station filed the charge sheet at the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Dhaka. The court confirmed this on Wednesday.
Himu died by suicide on November 2 last year. That night, her uncle, Nahid Akhtar, accused Rufi of encouraging her to take her own life. Rufi was arrested by RAB the next day and later jailed after several remands.
According to the charge sheet, Himu lived alone in an Uttara apartment, which she shared with makeup artist Kabir Ahmed Mihir. Rufi, who had divorced Himu’s cousin in 2014, was in frequent contact with Himu and visited her apartment regularly.
On November 1, 2023, after a disagreement, Himu blocked Rufi’s phone number and Vigo ID. The following day, Rufi visited her apartment. Mihir let him in, and shortly afterward, Rufi was found shouting that Himu had committed suicide.
The charge sheet claims that Rufi’s argument over the blocked communication led him to incite Himu’s suicide. Mihir discovered Himu hanging from a ceiling fan, with broken glass around her. Rufi and Mihir took her to Uttara Modern Medical College Hospital, where she was declared dead. During this time, Rufi fled with Himu’s two mobile phones.
Born on November 23, 1985, in Lakshmipur, Himu began her acting career in 2005 and gained fame for her roles in TV dramas, especially in the Noakhali dialect. She made her film debut in 2011 with "Amar Bondhu Rashed."
