The chairman candidate Humayun Kabir Chowdhury in Rajapalong Union Parishad by-election under Ukhiya upazila regained his candidacy by the order of the High Court on Thursady.
Ukhiya Upazila Parishad Chairman Jahangir Kabir Chowdhury, younger brother of candidate Humayun Kabir Chowdhury, confirmed the matter. He said that, the High Court passed this order following the writ petition on Thursday morning.
Earlier, Sadman Jami Chowdhury, son of former chairman of Rajapalong union Shah Kamal Chowdhury, who were elected chairman for four times, filed a complaint against candidate Humayun Kabir noting that he is a government employee. Sadman Jami’s cousin Barrister Saffat Fardin Chowdhury, who is also the son of upazila BNP president Sarwar Jahan Chowdhury, was the lawyer of Sadman Jami Chowdhury at that time.
A long court hearing was held at Cox's Bazar District Election Office regarding the appeal filed by Sadman Jami on Tuesday where the District Election Officer canceled the candidacy of Humayun by changing the previous decision of validity of nomination given by the Returning Officer. Barrister Mohammad Mizanur Rahman Chowdhury, son of Sayed Ahmed Chowdhury, was the lawyer for Humayun Kabir in the High Court. He is the first cousin of Humayan Kabir Chowdhury. He said his client has retired from government service following proper procedure.
Later, Humayun Kabir regained his candidacy following the writ petition on Thursday.
