Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Freedom Fighter Md. Rezaul Karim Chowdhury wants to remove the open garbage dump in the city and build a state-of-the-art underground waste storage (STS) there.
A three-member delegation of Finland's HABA Group made a presentation to the mayor at the CCC office near Tigerpass on Wednesday afternoon and highlighted the benefits of using this technology in the context of Bangladesh.
Meanwhile, CCC Mayor Rezaul said that the waste management of Chattogram is being organized more than any other time as the citizens are very aware. However, we now have to move towards cost-effective, technology-based and environment-friendly waste management. I want to modernize the waste management of Chattogram by 2024 to reduce the suffering of the citizens due to street waste.
Hari Soloma, Chief Executive Officer of Haba Group, Marketing Director Roshdi Ibrahim and Jahedul Alam Robin, who are in the delegation, said that in the conventional method of garbage disposal in Chattogram, after collecting waste from houses, the waste is dumped in the waste collection station (STS) on the road. Later, the staff of the city corporation's cleaning department collected the waste and took it to the landfill. In this manner, the citizens suffer from the stench of STS waste on the road and the waste on the road creates an unsightly situation.
If CCC agrees to solve this problem, HABA Group will build an underground waste storage facility, so that the garbage will not be seen or smelled. This modern waste collector will have the technology of compressing the waste through hydraulic pressure. As a result, twice as much waste can be collected in the same place than before. CCC cleaning department staff will automatically receive a message when this modern technology waste storage is full. The waste will then be collected and taken to the landfill by CCC's staff. The entire process is environmentally friendly on the one hand, will reduce citizen suffering, save CCC fuel consumption.
Mayor Rezaul asked the concerned officials to verify the possible place and feasibility of implementing this project. CCC Chief Executive Officer Sheikh Muhammad Tauhidul Islam, Mayor's Private Secretary Abul Hashem, Supervising Engineer Akbar Ali were present in the meeting.
