CCC mayor stresses research in mosquito control

Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Freedom Fighter Md. Rezaul Karim Chowdhury said that research is needed to bring mosquitoes under control.

He said, many people think that mosquitoes will decrease by killing tons and tons of mosquito repellent, this is not true.  We also have to keep the ecological balance in mind.  Frogs were once found in the city, which helped reduce mosquitoes by eating mosquito larvae.  A variety of beneficial insects were available which are not available now.  Mosquitoes have developed resistance to insecticides.

At this time, he announced to extend the activities from March 31 to reduce the prevalence of mosquitoes.  The mayor said in the president's speech at the 38th general meeting of the CCC 6th elected council organized in the conference room of the disaster management building near Laldighi on Thursday morning that mosquitoes are increasing rapidly in Chattogram like Dhaka.  Starting from next week, more comprehensive activities will be undertaken in each ward to kill mosquitoes by increasing the related manpower.  Initiatives must be taken now to prevent dengue outbreaks.  Councilors have to supervise these activities from the field.

Urging people to be aware, he said, our clean department is cleaning the drains.  Many times it is seen that all the coatings from tin shells have been dumped in the drains, which create waterlogging and become a breeding ground for mosquitoes.  If people are not aware, it will be difficult to reduce the prevalence of mosquitoes.  The situation will be overcome if people throw out the accumulated water in their houses once every three days and prevent people from creating floods by throwing garbage everywhere.  CDA has had to stop the flood control projects in 36 canals.  CDA Removing soil from dams and canals before monsoon will reduce waterlogging and mosquito infestation.

Stating that the development of Chattogram is being disrupted due to financial problems, the mayor said that Chattogram is the second city of the country.  Many big projects including Bay-terminal, Industrial Park, Deep Sea Port are being implemented around Chattogram.  The kind of infrastructure that Chittagong needs to make these projects a success cannot be built and maintained with holding tax and trade license income alone.

CCC's buildings are to be remunerated through upward expansion.  We will contact the ministry about this.

Regarding lighting in the city, the mayor said, I have instructed the electricity sub-department of CCC to light the roads, mosques and graveyards during Ramadan.  But I have found that many streets and alleys do not have street lights.  Councilors will keep the numbers of electricity inspectors in their respective areas.  If the lamp is not lit on any road, you will want to know why the lamp is not lit.  If no one responds, file a written complaint.  Cleaning department workers are often heard to leave after working for an hour or two.  Complain about them too.  If the complaint is proved after investigation, I will dismiss him.

Regarding the eviction of hawkers, the mayor said that people are breathing a sigh of relief as the illegal hawkers have been evicted by the combined efforts of the Chattogram City Corporation (CCC), district administration, police and RAB.  People are very happy.  The pent-up anger of the people has dissipated.  I will organize a holiday market for the poor hawkers.  But no one will be allowed to extort hawkers.  I will stop hurting people by hawking in alleys.  We are in touch with Railways and Public Works.  A holiday market will be opened only two days a week on abandoned land.

Regarding the holiday market, Assistant Engineer of Public Works Department (PWD) Ramizur Rahman said that two lands in Bayezid Bostami were freed from illegal occupation during the eviction campaign of CCC.

CCC Chief Executive Officer Sheikh Muhammad Tauhidul Islam said that according to the suggestion of the Standing Committee, the salary of the temporary employees will be increased from July 1.  The process of regularization of CCC temporary employees has also progressed considerably.
