The harvesting of Carrot is going on in full swing in Singair upazila of the district as excellent yield surfaced during the current season, officials said. The Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) said they set a target of carrot cultivation on 950 hectares of land with a production aim of 36,100 tonnes this season.
Carrot is the only vegetable that grows on special kind of land and Singair is known for carrot production in abundance.
The locals said the carrot is a short period crop and it has a great demand in the markets. The vegetable is being supplied to Dhaka and different parts of the country, they said.
Abdul Haque, 52 of village Dhalla under Singair upazila said carrot cultivation is easy and it needs no irrigation and extra fertilizer.
The green leaves of carrots are also a good fodder for cattle heads. Haque said every day a group of traders come to the village and buy it from the cultivators.Many trucks wait at different points of the area to carry the carrots as many labourers, mainly women are engaged in carrot harvesting.
Another cultivator Mainuddin said they are getting fair prices for their product as per kilogram is now being sold at Tk. 30- 35 in the markets.
He said that it is one of the best cash crops of the people of Singair upazila.
DAE sources said carrot grows in alluvial soil and Singair has some specific areas enriched with that kind of soil.
