Canadian Minister of International Development Karina Gould started a three-day virtual visit to Bangladesh on Tuesday.

During the visit, the Canadian High Commission in Dhaka said she will have the chance “to see firsthand how Canada’s development projects are being delivered, meet with affected populations, and hold bilateral discussions.”

Minister Gould will have met with the government officials and “key partners” to discuss Canada, Bangladesh cooperation, and the Rohingya refugee response.

Canada established diplomatic relations with Bangladesh in 1972. Since then, it has provided over $4 billion of international assistance to Bangladesh, according to the High Commission.

Current programming supports mutual priorities in the areas of gender equality and empowerment of women and girls, health, skills training and support to the ready-made garment sector. These development priorities are in line with Canada’s Feminist International Assistance Policy.

People-to-people links between Canada and Bangladesh are expanding.

The Bangladeshi-Canadian community is estimated at over 100,000 and continues to make significant contributions to Canadian prosperity and to the multi-cultural fabric of Canada, according to the government website.
