A visibly dejected Javier Cabrera addressed the fans through a Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) video message following their demoralising 4-0 defeat to Lebanon in Doha.
Gone was the pre-match optimism. Cabrera conceded, "Our lofty ambitions were ruthlessly dashed. It's a bitter pill to swallow." He acknowledged the passionate Bangladeshi supporters, lamenting, "The fans deserved a far better showing. Conceding a penalty so early was a real blow."
The Spaniard offered a flicker of hope, "There were positive signs in the first half. We showed some fight, but Lebanon ruthlessly exposed our defensive frailties on the counter-attack. That second goal just before half-time made the second half an uphill battle."
The gulf in class between the two sides was stark. Bangladesh travelled to the Khalifa Stadium with genuine belief. However, by the final whistle, Cabrera's post-match address felt like a replay of a familiar defensive
horror story.
Bangladesh's defensive woes were laid bare. Conceding goals is no surprise for a team with well-documented defensive issues. However, the alarming ease with which Lebanon dismantled them was a serious concern.
While Lebanon are undeniably the stronger team, they sit 64 places above Bangladesh in the FIFA rankings. Let's not forget, Bangladesh held them to a creditable 1-1 draw at home just days ago.
Cabrera's constant tinkering with the backline did little to inspire confidence. The decision to drop right-back Bishwanath after just one game raised eyebrows.
His tactical choices were also questioned. Opting for a five-man defensive line against Lebanon surprised many, particularly the inclusion of three central defenders. Newcomer Shakil endured a nightmare debut, conceding a needless penalty.
Bangladesh desperately need a reliable central defensive partnership. Cabrera's inability to settle on one is a major concern. They cannot afford such inconsistency at the heart of their defence, especially in crucial matches. Coach Tariq's settled backline in the previous match against Australia offered a stark contrast.
