By-elections to six constituencies, which fell vacant after opposition party BNP resigned from the National Parliament, are going to be held today, (Wednesday), February 1.
The Election Commission (EC), local administrations and law-enforcement agencies concerned have already taken all the necessary steps to hold the election free and fair.
EC officials said all the electoral equipment has already been sent to all the polling centres.
The voting activities will start from 8:00am and continue till 4:00pm.
Meanwhile, the government on Tuesday announced a public holiday on Wednesday in the election areas on the occasion of the by-elections.
The Ministry of Public Administration also published a gazette notification in this regard.
The notification reads: As per the demand of the Election Commission Secretariat, the Ministry of Public Administration has announced a public holiday for Wednesday in Thakurgaon-3, Bogura-4, Bogura-6, Chapainawabganj-2, Chapainawabganj-3 and Brahmanbaria-2.
Earlier on December 10 at a public rally, seven parliamentarians of BNP announced their resignation from the parliament. The next day, on December 11, Chapainawabganj-2 constituency lawmaker Md Aminul Islam, Bogra-4 constituency lawmaker Md. Mosharraf Hossain, Bogra-6 constituency lawmaker Golam Mohammad Siraj, Thakurgaon-3 Constituency lawmaker Zahidur Rahman resigned from the parliament.
Two other BNP lawmakers--Ukil Abdus Sattar of Brahmanbaria-2 constituency and Chapainawabganj-3 Harun-or-Rashid of Chapainawabganj-3 resigned from the parliament later.
Although all the six BNP lawmakers resigned from the parliament, one of those six lawmakers, Ukil Abdus Sattar is contesting in the election to Brahmanbaria-2 constituency, from where he had resigned earlier.
Besides, in the election, Awami League contested in three seats. Two other seats have been left for its two allies of the 14-party alliance while the Brahmanbaria has been kept open to all.
