A female student of Barisal University was crushed under the wheels of a speedy bus on Dhaka-Barishal Highway on Wednesday night.
Protesting the incident, other students of the university set a bus on fire and blocked the highway till late night.
Police and witnesses said, a bus of Narayanganj Paribahan crushed the student named Fauzia Mim in front of Gate-1 of the university at 8:30 pm on Wednesday while she was was crossing the road.
She was a second semester student of the 12th batch of Statistics Department.
Rafiqul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Bandar Police Station said that angry students blocked the Dhaka-Barisal highway till 2:30am and also set a bus on fire around 11:15 pm.
Bhumika Sarkar, one of the students of the University , said that Mim was crushed to death while crossing the road.
She alleged that the driver, supervisor and helper involved in the incident should quickly be arrested and brought to book.
Besides, they demanded to strengthen the road safety along with setting the speed limit on the highway in front of the university.
Rafiqul Islam, OC of Bandar police station of the city police, said that the highway was blocked to demand justice for the incident of the death of the student.
Efforts are on to arrest the driver, the OC said.
