Bhurungamari Upazila of Kurigram district has the possibility of bumper output of wheat in the current season. At the beginning of the season, due to the acute shortage of seeds, the farmers faced difficulties in wheat cultivation, but they managed to meet the target set by the Upazila Agriculture Department. Farmers are waiting to take home the wheat produced beyond the target.
According to the sources of the Upazila agriculture department, the farmers have cultivated different varieties of wheat on 1 thousand 700 hectares of land in the current season. 107 farmers of 10 unions have been provided with 20 kg of wheat seed and 10 kg of DAP and MOP fertilizer per person under agricultural incentives. The Upazila agriculture department expects to exceed the set target of wheat production as the weather is favorable.
Shahidul Islam, a farmer of Naleya village of Sadar Union of the Upazila, said that the cost of wheat cultivation is low. In the hope of good price and yield, I cultivated wheat in three bigha land. None of the wheat has to be thrown away. After selling wheat, money also comes from selling wheat flour.
Anwar Hossain, a farmer of Paschimchat Gopalpur village of Tilai Union, said that wheat grows better on high ground. Other expenses including irrigation are less. He sowed wheat in four bigha land. He hopes to benefit if there is no natural disaster.
Upazila Agriculture Officer Sujan Kumar Bhowmik said that the upazila agriculture department is expecting farmers to get a good yield of wheat as the weather is favorable. Farmers are now turning to wheat cultivation as there is an opportunity to cut wheat and grow jute.
