Maize production target taken in Chandpur this season is 66 thousand metric tonnes. Chandpur is one of the major riverain agricultural region of the country. The rivers Padma, Meghna, Dhanagoda and Dakatia flow through the district and produce a large crop in the river basin for agricultural production.
As Chandpur is one of the two irrigation projects in the country, about 15% of the country’s food grains are produced here. One is the Chandpur Irrigation Project and the other is the Meghna-Dhanagoda Irrigation Project. Besides, there are about 11-12 isolated char in Chandpur which are a huge source of food and rabi crops.
Chandpur has set a maize production target of 66,500 MT on 6,650 hectares of land this season. In Chandpur, farmers usually cultivate maize on the same land as potatoes, mustard and wheat. They do not have to pay extra labour, pesticides and fertilizers.
Due to favorable weather conditions, transportation facilities, provision of production technology by the agriculture department, improved communication system, easy availability of agricultural inputs, advice of agriculturists on the use of seeds, fertilizers and pesticides, provision of agricultural loans from banks, etc. farmers of Chandpur are cultivating maize on a large scale. Especially in Chandpur, the farmers produce a lot of maize.
With the help of loan from the farmers, it is possible to cultivate more maize in the char areas. According to sources in the Department of Agricultural Extension, Farm House, Chandpur, the cultivable area in Chandpur Sadar is 590 hectares and the production target has been set at 5,900 MT.
In the north, the cultivation target is 1,820 hectares and the production target is set at 18,200 MT. In other words, cultivation in the south is 2,670 hectares and production target has been set at 26,700 MT.
Cultivation in Hajiganj is 245 hectares and production target has been set at 2,465 MT. Cultivation in Shahrasti is 20 hectares and production is 200 MT.
Cultivation in Kachua is 1,125 hectares and production target has been set at 11,150 MT. Cultivation in Faridganj is 140 hectares and production target has been set at 1,400 MT. Cultivation in Haimchar is 15 hectares and production is 1,500 MT.
An agronomist of the Chandpur agriculture department said that the target for cultivation and production is higher this time as compared to the last few years.
He added that maize cultivation is increasing day by day in Chandpur. It plays a different role in meeting our sugar needs. There is a huge demand for it as fish and cattle feed. At present, in some areas, maize growers have started taking home.
