Bumper production of bean and its fair price have put wide smiles on the face of Kishoreganj farmers this year. Thirteen upazila of the district including Kishoreganj Sadar, Hossainpur and Pakundia saw bumper production of this winter vegetable this season.

The growers have been successful in cultivating two new varieties of bean named BARI-4 and IPSA-1 in the district which brought good luck for them.

8,700 hectares of land in total with a production target of 1,95,750 metric tons have been brought under vegetable cultivation in the district this season, said Kishoreganj Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Officer Md. Saiful Alam. Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) sources said they have taken steps to provide the growers with high yielding varieties of seeds, organic fertilizers, insecticides and other inputs for making the programme a success.

The farmers have also showed their interests in cultivating the vegetable as it is more profitable than any other traditional crops for its easy farming process.

Md. Akkas Ali, of Patuavanga village under Pakundia upazila, said the weather conditions, so far, are favoring the bean cultivation. He added that it will take less time than usual to extract the beans, if the weather remains consistent.

The authorities concerned have taken adequate steps for ensuring smooth supply of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, technical assistant and others inputs to the bean growers at grassroots level. Besides, commercial banks, other financial institutions and NGO's provided easy term agriculture loans in this connection.

On the other hand necessary training and advices were given to the cultivations for ensuring maximum production said the Kishoreganj DAE official.
