Illegal imported handsets that are not registered at National Equipment Identity Register (NEIR) will be deactivated in phases by Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (BTRC) from today.
BTRC in a press statement on Friday confirmed this. At the same time, the country’s mobile phone importers or locally mobile phone handset manufacturers have been instructed not to produce and import illegal handsets.
The statement said if a seller sells any illegal handset, the price of the handset has to be refunded as per the demand of the buyer. No seller should sell illegal handsets.

The BTRC has also warned that action will be taken against those involved in the manufacture, import and sale of illegal handsets in accordance with the Telecommunications Act. NEIR has been in operation since July 1 this year to ensure government revenue collection by stopping the use of illegally manufactured or imported mobile phones.
