BS-2 to be launched

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between Bangladesh Satellite Company Limited and Russian Federation Glavkosmos for launching Bangabandhu Satellite-2 into space.

With this the construction of the Earth Observatory category satellite began. The Memorandum of Understanding was signed at the head office of Bangladesh Satellite Company Limited (BSCL) in the presence of the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications Mustafa Jabbar on Wednesday.

BSCL Chairman and CEO Dr Shahjahan Mahmud presided over the function while the event was attended by Department of Posts and Telecommunications Secretary Md Khalilur Rahman, Ambassador of Russia to Bangladesh Alexander Vikentevich Mantitsky. Ambassador of Bangladesh to Russia Kamrul Ahsan and Glavkosmos Director General Dmitry Loskutov virtually connected the programme.

Speaking as the chief guest on the occasion, the minister said, “The government has taken initiative to build Bangabandhu Satellite-2 in collaboration with the Russian government. Mentioning that the government is committed to implement the promises made in the 2018 election manifesto, he said Bangladesh has entered the 5G era on December 12, 2021 in continuation of the implementation of the 2018 election manifesto. We have already signed an agreement with the consortium to connect the third submarine cable which implementation work has started. Our third commitment is to build Bangabandhu Satellite-2. This collaboration illuminated this journey through the signing of the memorandum.” 

The Secretary for Posts and Telecommunications expressed strong hope that Bangabandhu Satellite-2 would accelerate the progress of building Digital Bangladesh in space.

BSCL Chairman and CEO Dr Shahjahan Mahmud highlighted the different contexts of launching Bangabandhu Satellite-2 in space and said that Bangabandhu Satellite-2 is a unique initiative of the government.

Russia's Ambassador to Bangladesh expressed hope that the existing excellent historical ties between the two countries would be further consolidated in the days to come. Bangladesh’s Ambassador to Russia Kamrul Ahsan expressed the same expectation.

Chairman and CEO of BSCL Dr Shahjahan Mahmud, and Director General of Glavkosmos Dmitry Loskutov signed the MoU on behalf of their respective organisations.
