Students at Begum Rokeya University (BRUR) in Rangpur gathered with garlands of shoes on Thursday, expressing their anger towards Chhatra League leaders and activists accused of attacking fellow students during the recent anti-discrimination movement.
The protest occurred as news spread that the alleged attackers would be coming to campus to take exams. Students assembled outside the university's No. 3 academic building at 3 PM, waiting for the leaders to arrive. However, after waiting for a long time, they eventually left when no one showed up. The students stated they were prepared to greet the Chhatra League members with shoe garlands as a symbol of their discontent. “We will hand them over to the administration for legal action,” one student said. They emphasised their refusal to attend classes alongside those they view as responsible for violence.
Reflecting on the recent tragedy, a student added, “Our brother Abu Sayeed was martyred on the BRUR campus. His bloodstains are still fresh. We won’t sit for exams with these miscreants.”
In response, Proctor Dr. Ferdous Rahman urged students not to take the law into their own hands. He confirmed that an inquiry committee has been formed to investigate the incidents, stating, “Only after the report is released will we know who is guilty.”
