The authorities of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) has provided a job to Sumi Khatun, younger sister of Shaheed Abu Sayed, a student of the Department of English, who was shot during the student-mass movement that toppled the Awami League regime.
BRUR Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Showkat Ali on Wednesday evening handed over the appointment letter to Sumi Khatun for the post of Seminar Attendant (temporary) against the permanent post of Lab Attendant.
Registrar (additional charge) of the university Professor Dr Md Tajul Islam, Additional Registrar (establishment section) Dr Ziaul Haque and officials of the university were present on the occasion.
Shaheed Abu Sayeed’s elder brothers Ramjan Ali and Abu Hossain also attended the brief function at the office room of BRUR VC.
On July 16, protesters marched five kilometres through Rangpur city to Begum Rokeya University, with Sayed joining them. Clashes erupted with quota supporters, and police fired rounds of rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.
Despite the chaos, Abu Sayed stood firm, refusing to budge. At one point, he was shot in the chest and fell to the ground.
He was immediately taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, where the attending physician declared him dead.
He was one of the coordinators of the anti-discrimination student movement at the university.
Abu Sayed was the son of day laborer Makbul Hossain from the Zafarpur area of Babunpur village in the Madankhali Union of Pirganj upazila. He was the youngest among six brothers and had three sisters.
