A bridge was constructed over Sonali Khal (irrigation canal) at Garamara village under Halidhani union in Jhenaidah sadar without approach roads. It seems that it is a ‘Bridge to Nowhere’ that means the bridge is no longer used, but won’t be demolished because of the cost.

The 20-foot RCC bridge was constructed at a cost of Tk 16 lakh during 2017-18 fiscal under bridge-culvert construction programme of disaster management department.

Locals said a road out of two of the unplanned bridge was constructed on the lands of locals without their consent. Further, it comes in no effect as there was no road at other part of the bridge. The locals demand immediate construction of approach roads on the two sides of the bridge.

Abul Hossain Mandal of the village said 12 decimals of his four-father’s land was recorded as the canal. The bridge was constructed on a portion of his land without any planning as there is no road at the ending portion. He owns a garden there. Now many people want to use his garden as road. It has been creating noise and quarrel in the locality, he added.

Khalilur Rahman, an UP member, said that the authorities could discuss the matter with elected local representatives for betterment of the locality before the construction work.

Upazila Project Implementation Officer (PIO) Neuton Bain said that he was not informed about the RCC bridge. He will take necessary steps to construct approach roads with the bridge for the interest of the people with requisite procedure in next course.
