Brick kiln owners, labourers want amendment of law

Brick Kiln Owners Association and brick kiln labourers staged demonstration in Kushia and Chuadanga on Thursday (February 4) demanding annulment of some sections of brick kiln act of 2013 and protesting raid against brick kilns. 

In Chuadanga, brick kiln owners and labourers brought out procession, formed human chain and submitted memorandum in favour of their demand. 

The procession was brought out from Town Food Ball Maidan and ended at Chuadanga Hasan Chattor. Then they formed the human chain there. 

Brick kiln owners and labourers staged a demonstration in Kushtia on Thursday protesting raids against their establishments.

President of Chuadanga Brick Kiln Owners Association Bazlur Rahman and general secretary Motaleb Hossain spoke at the human chain, among others. Later, they submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister through Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Chuadanga Nazrul Islam Sarker.

In Kushtia, the district Brick Kiln wners Association, brick kiln owners submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister through the DC. Earlier, they organised a rally and human chain programme in the morning.

Brick kiln owners and workers of six upazillas of Kushtia took part in the human chain and rally held in front of Kushtia Stadium. Haji Akhtaruzzaman Mithu, President of Kushtia Brick Kiln Owners Association and General Secretary Ziaur Rahman Zia addressed the gathering, among others. 

The speakers said that about one crore low-income workers have become unemployed due to the massive operation of brick kilns by the Department of Environment (DoE) ignoring the interests of the workers and owners without providing alternative arrangements in Khulna division. 

Thousands of low-income owners have gone bankrupt overnight with bank loans worth thousands of crores. The lives of millions of workers have fallen into uncertainty due to the loss of work, they added.
