The Bangladesh U-20 team celebrated their triumph as SAFF champions three weeks ago. However, the situation has since taken a turn. The young squad suffered a 0-4 defeat to Syria on Saturday in Vietnam during the qualifiers for the AFC U-20 tournament.

Bangladesh now face a must-win match against Guam on Monday at Lạch Tray Stadium, Vietnam. In their opening match, Guam drew 1-1 with Bhutan at the same venue.

In the FIFA rankings, Bangladesh is positioned at 186, while Guam is at 204. This ranking disparity reflects the differing football realities in the two countries. Bangladesh also holds an advantage in the U-20 category. Maruful Haque's team must now demonstrate their superiority on the field against Guam.

Bangladesh struggled against Syria, who dominated the match entirely, scoring two goals in each half. The goals were a result of both Syrian prowess and lapses in Bangladesh's defence and goalkeeping.

The AFC U-20 qualifiers consist of ten groups, with the group champions and the top five runners-up advancing to the finals. Bangladesh's heavy defeat has jeopardised their chances of progressing to the next round. Speaking to BFF media after the match, the Bangladesh coach emphasised the necessity of winning the next game. "Our second match against Guam is crucial; it is vital for us. If we falter, we may have to exit the tournament," he stated.

“We have prepared thoroughly to play well against Guam. We are taking this match very seriously. It is very important for us, and we aim to bounce back,” the coach added.

Both teams will be playing their second match. Guam has one point, while Bangladesh has none, having conceded four goals. To advance to the final round of the AFC U-20 tournament, Bangladesh must win their remaining matches.

“Playing consecutive matches in Vietnam's weather is challenging. Even a draw against Guam could give us a chance to progress to the final round. Therefore, we will play for a victory," Maruful concluded, noting that they have addressed the mistakes from the first match.
