Antibody production increases by five times in the human body after taking the booster vaccine to prevent coronavirus found a study by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU).
The research was conducted on 223 people who received the booster dose of the vaccine.
BSMMU Vice-Chancellor and head of the research team Md Sharfuddin Ahmed disclosed the information at a press briefing in Dhaka on Wednesday.
Chairman of the Department of Hematology, Professor Md Salahuddin Shah was involved in the research project as a co-researcher.
Professor Sharfuddin Ahmed said that in the first stage after vaccination, antibodies were found in 98 percent of the receivers.
“More antibodies have been found in the bodies of people who were infected with in the past. Antibody levels have dropped in most cases within six months of vaccination. After taking the booster dose, antibodies were produced in the body by 100 percent of the research participants. Moreover, there was no change in the blood parameters,” he said.
He further said that evidence of the necessity and effectiveness of taking booster doses has been found in the information obtained from this study.
“Contemporary research is needed to verify the necessity of taking booster doses at regular intervals in the future. As well as ensuring proper adherence to health rules is essential,” he added.
The BSMMU Vice-Chancellor further mentioned that most of the participants in the study were involved in healthcare.
“More than half of the participants were already suffering from diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma and other diseases before participating in the research. However, there was no difference in the production of antibodies due to such conditions. 42 percent of participants reported mild side effects after receiving the vaccine but blood clotting or any other complex side effects were not observed during the study,” he said.
According to the report, the study measured levels of antibodies against coronavirus in the body one month after the two-dose vaccine, 6 months after the two-dose vaccine and one month after the booster dose.
So far more than 100 million people in Bangladesh have taken the first dose of the vaccine. More than 75 million people have taken the second dose and more than three million people have taken the booster dose.
