Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday emphasies on strengthening global solidarity and taking concerted efforts to tackle the global crisis at the G-20 Summit.
Sheikh Hasina placed four-point recommendation at the summit.
Addressing the 'One Earth' session at the summit, the Prime Minister said in the first point of her recommendations, "The G20 and international financial institutions have an important role to play here, and Bangladesh is ready to support their efforts to formulate effective recommendations to address the crisis."
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina attended the summit held at Pragati Maidan's Bharat Mandapam Convention Center at the invitation of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Sheikh Hasina said in the second point that bold, firm and concerted action must be taken globally for the greater good of humanity and to ensure peace and stability across the world.
The Prime Minister said, major economic countries should fulfil their due responsibilities for global development.
“As a member of the Troika of the Climate Vulnerable Forum, she said, "I urge everyone to launch a damage and loss fund as soon as possible to provide additional financing to address climate-related migration."
She further said, “At the upcoming COP-28, I would urge all to insist on implementation of funds for loss and damage with accountability and transparency.'
The Prime Minister of Bangladesh finally opined that all people should have equal rights to live a decent life.
"The global community must not forget to ensure the repatriation of Rohingya citizens forcibly displaced from Myanmar to their homeland and continue their humanitarian assistance", she said.
Sheikh Hasina also said, 'We look forward to working with G20 partners to save and strengthen our planet'.
"We need to look out for each other and recommit ourselves to taking care of our mother earth," she said.
As a champion of the UN Secretary General's Global Crisis Response Group formed in 2022, Sheikh Hasina made the recommendations.
Addressing this session of the summit, she also said, 'We want a global system that addresses poverty alleviation, mitigating the harmful effects of climate change, conflict prevention and financing technology transfer to build a knowledge-based society.'
Addressing the session, the Prime Minister said that the summit is being held at a time when 'our mother Earth' is being affected by multiple crises of climate change, the Covid-19 pandemic and challenges of sanctions and counter-sanctions.
She pointed out, "These challenges are essential for the peace and development of mankind and for future generations to adopt the vision of the community by other communities."
She further said that the reality is that only cooperation can save humanity and the earth. "Hence, our development efforts are focused on green and sustainable development," she said, adding, "Now, we are also taking a circular economy approach."
Bangladesh is suffering most as a victim of the consequences of global climate change despite its negligible contribution.
According to the World Bank's Groundswell Report 2021, the effects of climate change could displace 13.3 million people from their natural habitats by 2050.
Sheikh Hasina said, though Bangladesh has little scope for mitigation, many transformative steps have been taken to address the dangerous impacts of climate change in line with the implementation of the Paris Agreement and the achievement of the SDGs.
In this context, she said, she started a project called Asharyan for the homeless people of Bangladesh.
She mentioned that under this initiative, till August this year, her government has rehabilitated around 840 thousand landless and homeless families with free houses and land.
She said, "Our goal is to free Bangladesh of the homeless and the landless."
Mentioning that Bangladesh is known as a 'role model of disaster management', the Prime Minister said that it has achieved strong status in disaster preparedness and climate adaptation.
Her government has built 4,530 cyclone shelters for disaster preparedness. Apart from this, 550 more cyclone shelters named 'Mujib Killa' are being constructed for various purposes.
She said, "We have launched the 'Mujib Climate Prosperity Plan' for Bangladesh to deal with the risks of climate change."
Sheikh Hasina said that her government has formulated the long-term Bangladesh Delta Plan-2100 with the aim of building a livable and prosperous delta for our future generations.
She also said, 'In 2022, my government launched the National Adaptation Plan. 230 billion US dollars are required to implement this project by 2050. We call for active support from developed countries in this regard.
