Celebrations are in order for Bangladeshi cinema as the gripping film "Boli" (The Wrestler) earns a prestigious nomination at the Shanghai International Film Festival. Following its triumph at the Busan Film Festival, where it clinched multiple awards in the New Currents category, "Boli" continues to make waves on the international stage.

Directed by Iqbal Hossain Chowdhury, "Boli" impressed judges at Busan with its enchanting storytelling, described as an extraordinary single-round match narrated with magic. This achievement marks a significant milestone as it's the first time a Bangladeshi film has secured an award in Busan's esteemed New Currents section.

In an interview with Japan's Nikkei, director Iqbal shared insights into the inspiration behind the film, citing the mysterious allure of the sea and its ability to evoke both joy and childhood traumas caused by cyclones. Rooted in his own life experiences and folklore, "Boli" presents a highly imaginative yet deeply personal narrative.

Produced by Piplu Khan, with Saiful Azim and Gausul Alam Shaon as co-producers, "Boli" received government funding for the fiscal year 2020-21, highlighting the support for the burgeoning Bangladeshi film industry. Nasir Uddin Khan takes on the lead role, portraying an eccentric fisherman from the coastal regions, adding authenticity and depth to the storytelling.

The film's selection for the International Panorama section at the Shanghai International Film Festival underscores its international appeal and recognition. As "Boli" continues to captivate audiences worldwide, it stands as a testament to the talent and creativity within Bangladesh's cinematic landscape.
