A boat carrying Rohingyas who were fleeing from Myanmar and trying to enter here capsized. Bodies of 18 Rohingya people, including children, were found at the coast of Bay at Teknaf in Cox’s Bazar on Tuesday. At least 22 others went missing in the incident.
The incident happened in Habirchhara and Razarchhara point and Sabrang Noakhali Para and Shah Pariri Dwip point under Teknaf Sadar union after 12:00 noon.
Among the deceased, there are eight children, seven women and three men. Two people were rescued alive.
Teknaf Sadar Union No. 1 ward UP Member Abdur Rashid said bodies of 13 Rohingyas were found as a boat capsized in the Bay in Teknaf. The incident happened when they were fleeing from Myanmar to save their lives and coming here. The bodies were handed over to their relatives in the camp following the directions of administration. It was known that there were 40 Rohingyas in the boat.
Local representatives said many Rohingyas entered through Teknaf border in last two days. Seeking anonymity, local representatives said although many Rohingyas entered into the camp, members of BGB detained some of them. They were kept under BGB custody.
Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Adnan Choudhury said bodies of 18 Rohingyas were rescued as a boat carrying Rohingyas capsized. Legal procedures are underway in this connection. Besides, several Rohingyas entered who are under BGB custody.
