Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr. Hasan Mahmud on Wednesday said BNP does not look forward to elections rather they look for secret ways to come into power.

He made the remark while responding to a question from reporters after speaking as the chief guest at the 5th-anniversary function of Business Bangladesh and launching the ceremony of English daily Daily Bangladesh Update at Officers’ Club Dhaka on Wednesday morning.

Regarding BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir's remark on the voting environment, Hasan Mahmud said, “I want to hear from BNP about their definition of the voting environment. The advance decision and guarantee of BNP’s winning is the definition of an appropriate voting environment for them.”

The Information Minister mentioned that the BNP had won in many places as there is a free and fair voting environment in Bangladesh.

He said, “The BNP has become isolated and they are afraid to participate in the local government elections.”

The minister further said that Mirza Fakhrul’s statement is nothing new.

“They want a system in Bangladesh that will ensure that the BNP will come to power. The Awami League is elected by the people and Awami League will run the government in the future too if people vote for them. The Awami League has no other way. However, Mirza Fakhrul is looking for secret ways,” he said.

In response to the BNP's demand to take BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia abroad for treatment, Hasan Mahmud said, “I wish and pray for Begum Khaleda Zia’s quick recovery. Begum Zia has recovered and returned home after receiving treatment at local hospitals in the capital many times before. My question is why they have so much contempt for the medical system and doctors of Bangladesh.”

Advocate Abul Hashem Khan, Daily Jugantar Editor Saiful Alam, Additional Secretary and Officers’ Club Dhaka’s General Secretary Mesbah Uddin, Dhaka Range Police DIG Habibur Rahman, Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) General Secretary Sajjad Alam Khan Tapu, and Daily Shomoyer Alo Executive Editor Harun Ur Rashid spoke as the special guests on the occasion.
