A court on Thursday acquitted 12 BNP men, including BNP Vice Chairman Barkatullah Bulu, and District Jubo Dal President Manjurul Azim Sumon, in the case of Cyber Security Act in Begumganj of Noakhali.
Judge Zahirul Islam of Chattogram Cyber Tribunal passed the order around 12:30pm on the day.
Zayed bin Rashid, the lawyer for the defendants at the Divisional Cyber Tribunal, confirmed the information.
According to the complaint of the case and the sources of the victims, in connection with the attack on a temple at Choumuhani of Begumganj in 2021, President of Noakhali District Jubo Dal Manjurul Azim Sumon and Vice-President of Noakhali District Swechchhasebok Dal Faisal Inam Kamol were physically and mentally tortured by the then District Superintendent of Police. At one stage, a ransom of Tk 2 crore was demanded from Manjurul Azim Sumon while Tk 1 crore was taken from him. After making a planned statement under Section 164, BNP Central Vice Chairman Barkat Ulla Bulu and 12 leaders of Begumganj Upazila BNP and its affiliated organisations were made accused in the case filed under the Digital Security Act.
Zayed bin Rashid, the lawyer for the accused at the Divisional Cyber Tribunal, also said that this false case was filed during the tenure of the previous government. After hearing, it seems that this is a false case. So, the judge acquitted all the accused.
