The BNP-Jamaat terrorists in seven separate arson attacks torched over 11 vehicles while ransacked several other vehicles across the country during their 48-hour blockade on the 7th phase from Sunday to Monday.
According to Shahjahan Shikdar, deputy director of Fire Service and Civil Defence Media Cell, BNP-Jamaat cadres set fire to a total of 10 vehicles during the period.
One of those was set ablaze in Dhaka’s Jatrabari area under Mayor Hanif Flyover. Five buses, four trucks and one covered van were also burnt during this period, he said.
The terrorists torched one vehicle, each in Dhaka city, Naogaon, Kishoreganj, Khagrachhari, Dinajpur, Rajshahi and in Sylhet district. They also torched three buses in Natore district.
The unruly BNP-Jamaat activists until now torched 218 vehicles during the blockade programmes and hartals (general strikes), most of which were unsuccessful, since October 28, according to reports shared by police headquarters.
The blockade supporters torched a passenger bus of Baishakhi Paribahan in the capital's Shyamoli area on Monday.
The BNP-Jamaat cadres torched three buses of GM Paribahan that were parked at Patwari Filling Station in Mohishbhanga area beside Bonpara-Hatikumrul highway in Baraigram upazila of Natore district early Monday.
At around 4:30am three buses of GM Paribahan suddenly caught fire and the filling station staff informed the police and fire service.
On receiving the information, Bonpara Fire Service personnel rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control. Before that, three buses were burnt in the fire, officer in-charge (OC) of Baraigram Police Station Shafiul Azam said.
The filling station is owned by Member of Parliament (MP) Dr. Siddiqur Rahman Patwari.
A total of 230 platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) were deployed across the country to maintain law and order.
Shariful Islam, public relations officer (PRO) at BGB headquarters, confirmed it.
The members of the paramilitary force performed their duties to ensure safety of lives and properties in the country since the political parties began observing blockades and hartals from the end of last month.
