Several patients carrying the symptoms of black fungus are now being treated in various hospitals of the country. Already, the presence of Black Fungus is being suspected in the body of a patient who died during treatment in a hospital in Dhaka recently.

Some specialist physicians of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) informed, the black fungus grows naturally and is found in natural environment. The patients having less resistance power to deal with diseases are more susceptible to be attacked with the virus.

Medicine specialist of RMCH Dr Partho Moni Bhattachariya said,  “Those who suffer from uncontrolled diabetes are more susceptible to be attacked with black fungus while those who take steroids are also susceptible to fall prey to black fungus.”  He said Mucormicosis or black fungus is not contagious but it can attack in any place of the body. Specially, it infects the nose and the eyes. If it infects the eyes, it can spread rapidly in the brain.

The blood circulation of the infected area is disrupted and the area turns black. Maintaining cleanliness is essential to remain safe from the disease. Moreover, a patient should remain alert in controlling diabetes and taking steroids. Black fungus infection is linked to the patients recovered from Coronavirus infection after being treated with steroids. Those who suffer from diabetes also run the risk of being attacked with black fungus.

After being cured from Covid-19 infection 12 to 18 days ago, a patient can be infected with black fungus.

Specialist physicians at RMCH said, it is high time we become alert of the black fungus. Already the Indian variant of Coronavirus has been detected in Chapainawabganj and Rajshahi. Moreover, the rate of Corona infection in the districts is very high. Under such a situation, there is no alternative but to be conscious and alert.

During this time, everyone should wear a clean mask properly, control diabetes, keep the oxygen cylinder, masks and pipes clean. The authorities concerned should also be more vigilant to ensure that patients are following the cleanliness rules, controlling their diabetes, wearing masks and using clean oxygen cylinders, pipes and masks.

Shamim Yazdani, Director of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital informed, “The reistance power to diseases has been decreased among the elderly patients. They should remain more alert in this connection. I have already talked to the physicians of various departments on the issue. All of them said, the most important thing in this connection is to remain clean and tidy and to take treatment.

A Corona patient carrying other diseases is more susceptible to suffer from black fungus that is why this disease should be treated with the advice and prescription of the qualified doctors only. We are trying to make the Corona patients and their attendants conscious at the hospital in this connection.

Dr Quiyum Talukder, Civil Surgeon of Rajshahi informed there is nothing to be worried about with the black fungus. The black fungus has been prevailing here from an earlier time. Since the people in earlier times were more disease resistant, the death rate was less then but now the power to resist disease has waned, people are dying more.

He added, if any symptom of being attacked with the Corona or black fungus is felt, the patients should consult with the specialist physicians. They should be admitted to the hospital.

He further said, two patients in Dhaka are suspected to carry the black fungus virus. So far, no symptom of black fungus attack has been detected in any patient. The fungus causes harm to the patients having less disease resistance power. That is why if any symptom of black fungus is found in a man or woman he or she should immediately consult with the specialist physician.
