Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson confirms that his plan for Black Adam's DCEU future absolutely includes fighting Superman, but he doesn't say when.
The Rock confirms that he will absolutely fight Superman in the DC Extended Universe after Black Adam. The DCEU began in 2013 with Henry Cavill's Man of Steel, but Dwayne Johnson has been trying to play Black Adam for even longer. Audiences are now only a few weeks away from finally seeing Black Adam, the final DC movie of 2022. It is here that Johnson makes his DCEU debut as Black Adam alongside members of the Justice Society of America. Black Adam is confirmed to include connections to the wider cinematic universe, including a cameo from The Suicide Squad's Amanda Waller. There is also continued speculation that Black Adam will include or at least reference Superman.
For nearly as long as Johnson has been attached to play Black Adam, the actor has hyped the potential big-screen encounter between him and Superman. The direct teases of Superman and Black Adam meeting in the DCEU can be dated back to late 2016, when Cavill posted an image with Johnson teasing their excitement for the future. Johnson has done his part to repeatedly tease a Superman fight ever since then, including a more recent tease that he always listens to fans in response to Black Adam and Superman fan art. The Black Adam star even shaded the DCEU's mishandling of Superman and his long absence.
As part of the Black Adam press tour, Johnson has once again been asked about a potential Superman fight during an interview with CinemaBlend. Due to the frequency of his teases, the outlet asks Johnson if he plans to make a movie where Black Adam and Superman fight. The Rock does not mince words in his response, stating that this is "absolutely" his intention. Furthermore, he suggests that a Superman and Black Adam encounter is one of the main reasons why a new era for the DCEU is about to begin.
Absolutely. That is the whole point of this man. Thank you for asking that. And I have been saying for some time, there's a new era in the DC Universe that's about to begin. And what I meant by that was introducing a brand new character. It's not a sequel, not an existing IP.
It was...you know, Black Adam! Two years ago the world had no idea who he was. We did, but not, you know, the rest of the mass out there. Introducing the JSA, introducing that new era of the DC universe. But also what I really meant by, ‘This is a new era in the DC Universe,’ is listening to the fans. Listening to the fans. And doing our best to give the fans what they want. And maybe, sometime down the road — and I went through this in pro wrestling — is you can't always give them what you want. But you'll always know that we're listening. And in this case, with what you and I are talking about, I have been listening and I've been wanting to address fans for years. Because I've been waiting for someone to step up and address the fans and say, ‘Hey, we hear you.’ So finally, after many months turned into many years, we ended up with what we ended up at. And the whole goal and intention now is to this new era, new time. Now let's build out.
