After visiting the Biral land port in Dinajpur, Railway Minister Nurul Islam Sujan, MP, has said that the work of upgrading the port and verification of the feasibility of the project of constructing an additional 4-lane railway in the Bangladesh part will start soon.
“We are working with the Guidance of the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for the development of the country in all areas including the transport of people from the neglected northern region,” the minister said.
An agreement was signed in 2006 with a private operator in the name of Biral Land Port Limited for 25 years under Public Private Partnership to expand the profitable railway. This is why 17 acres of land was acquired at that time to build the infrastructure. But, the port operations could not be started after 14 years due to various complications.
However, in addition to converting the meter gauge railway to dual gauge at a cost of Tk 1300 crore, various railway stations including the railway have been modernized already.
The launch of the Biral land port will benefit the economy in addition to creating employment for half a million people in the region.
Dinajpur DC Md. Mahmudul Alam, Police Super Anwar Hossain, District AL unit Secretary Azizul Imam Chowdhury, Managing Director of Biral Landport Limited, Shahidur Rahman Patwari Mohan and others were present at the time.
