Biman moves to alleviate financial burden

Published : 10 May 2024 10:26 PM

Biman Bangladesh Airlines has emerged as a shining example of success in the aviation industry. Despite the difficulties exacerbated by the global pandemic, the national carrier has charted a course towards sustainable growth, supported by wise decision-making and unwavering commitment.

Since 2011, Biman Bangladesh Airlines embarked on a strategic journey, borrowing USD 2,093 million to bolster its fleet with aircraft from renowned manufacturers such as Boeing and de Havilland Company. With a fleet comprising two 737-800s, four 777-300ER, six 787 Dreamliners, and two Dash 8-Q400, the airline has not only expanded its operational capacity but also enhanced its service quality.

Crucially, Biman has demonstrated prudent financial management, successfully repaying USD 1,570 million in principal and interest by April 2024, in line with scheduled installments. Notably, ownership transfers for several Boeing aircraft are in progress, further alleviating financial burdens.

Amid the challenging economic landscape during the pandemic, Biman Bangladesh Airlines availed Tk 788 crore in financial incentive loans from the government for working capital.

However, the airline swiftly repaid these loans, illustrating its commitment to financial responsibility and self-sustainability.

Furthermore, Biman Bangladesh Airlines has leveraged its own resources to acquire additional aircraft, with two DASH-8-300s and two 737-800s joining the fleet through lease-to-own arrangements. Currently boasting a fleet of 19 owned aircraft, the airline stands as a testament to self-reliance and prudent investment.

Despite its commendable achievements, Biman Bangladesh Airlines has faced unwarranted skepticism regarding its financial viability and business progress. However, the airline categorically denounces such baseless allegations, attributing its success to effective management strategies and the unwavering support of the government, notably under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
