The police will not stop the motorcyclists who have taken 'Movement Pass' from the District Superintendent of Police (SP) or Highway Police Superintendent concerned during the Eid journey.
The government has banned the movement of bikes to avoid accidents on the highways ahead of Eid. In this situation many have reached their homes in uncertainty.
The officials discussed the issue at a meeting at Rajarbagh Police Lines on Tuesday after imposing restrictions on the movement of motorcycles on the highway.
In the meeting, they agreed that many people would not be able to go home under such a decision because they did not buy public transport ticket as they have their own motorcycles. As a result, they won’t be able to go home on Eid. If so, their rights will be violated. Taking everything into consideration, it was decided that the police headquarters would arrange the movement pass for the motorcyclists on a valid ground.
Senior officials have discussed the matter and agreed that it is very difficult to implement the decision under the pressure of homebound people on Eid. This will create public dissatisfaction. In this regard, the DMP Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam said, “We have seen all aspects of the movement of the bikers. Those who could show logical reasons cannot be prevented. Considering their movement jeopardy, the police headquarters will arrange movement pass for the bikers. With the pass they can travel to their ancestral houses to celebrate the Eid with their dear and near ones.”
“The issue of banning bikes on the highway during Eid is being reconsidered. If they can show logical reasons then their movement will not be prevented,” he added.
Citing an example, the DMP Commissioner said, “Suppose one goes home to celebrate Eid with his parents and takes his family with him. That is the logical reason. If so, we will let him take the motorcycle and they will be nominated for the pass. Only you can take yourself and your family with you. However, no ride can be shared with a motorcycle.”
Earlier on July 3, restrictions were imposed on travel by motorcycles on the highways from one district to another. The decision left bikers deeply dissatisfied. They held a programme in the capital and demanded reconsideration of the decision.
Motorcyclists can travel to specific destinations with their families for the same logical reasons as they did during the Corona epidemic.
For this, the police headquarters is preparing a sample of the movement pass.
Dhaka District Superintendent of Police (SP) Maruf Hossain Sardar said, “We will follow the BRTA policy. We have the movement pass formatted. If anyone applies to us, we will provide pass.”
Additional Superintendent of Highway Police (Operations and Media) Shamsul Alam Sarkar said that movement passes could be obtained from five regional superintendents of highway police and the district police superintendents concerned. By showing this pass, they will be able to move without any hindrance.
No one will be allowed on the highway without a pass, he added.
