Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in Moheshpur frontier of Jhenaidah, have arrested a gold smuggler and seized 99 bars of golden bars weighting 5.530 kilogram. Approximate price of the seized bars is estimated for Taka eight crore.
But the BGB sources could not find out whether the gold bars had entered in to Bangladesh territory from India, or taken towards the neighboring country by through some smugglers. To make sure of accurate weight and market price of the gold bars, the BGB had requested the jewelry owner’s association president and his leaders to sit in the BGB camp in the afternoon of Friday.
BGB 58 battalion camp commander in Moheshpur Lieutenant colonel Shaheen Azad told the Bangladesh Post that they were informed that a motor biker was carrying huge gold bars on his bike. Acting on the tip off, a contingent of BGB personnel of Matila border outpost challenged a man namely Ibrahim Khalil of Jhenaidah with the motorbike at about 7.30 in the morning of Friday. Sensing the BGB presence, the biker tried to flee, but failed. Later the BGB men seized 98 smaller bars and a large size bar from the plastic bag he was carrying. The bards were hided with technique with the motorbike.
In the interrogation with the BGB men, arrested Ibrahim Khalil said some Mostafa of Jhenaidah had requested him to carry the same to his destination in Jhenaidah town. He did not provide detail about the bars anymore, BGB official said.
Lieutenant colonel Shaheen Azad said he was not sure whether the gold bars entered in to Bangladesh territory from neighboring India, or was targeted to leave the country. To assess the actual weight and present market price of the gold bars, he had invited the leaders of jewelry owners
association at Moheshpur in the afternoon of Friday.
