Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized 2.125 kg of crystal meth (ice) and 4,740 pieces of yaba pills from Teknaf upzila of Cox’s Bazar during two separate drives.
The detainee was identified as Rayla Begum, 55, daughter of Taiyab Golal, resident of Shahporir Dwip in Teknaf upazila. She was detained with 4,740 pieces of yaba pills.
Commander of BGB 2 Teknaf Battalion Lieutenant Colonel Md Mohiuddin Ahmed confirmed the matter on Monday.
He said one of the drive was conducted on early Sunday.
According to Lt Colonel Mohiudding, BGB received a tip-off about a large shipment of drugs entering Bangladesh through the Chowdhurypara sluice gate area in Teknaf. Acting on the tip-off, two patrol teams strategically positioned themselves around the suspicious area. At around 4:30am, one suspect was seen crossing the Naf River towards the sluice gate. When the patrol team challenged him, the individual, sensing the presence of the BGB, dropped his bag and jumped into the river, quickly fleeing to Myanmar. The bag was later searched, revealing 2.125 kg of crystal meth (ice).
Meanwhile, around 8:00am on Monday, a passenger bus named Palki Paribahan, traveling from Teknaf to Cox's Bazar, was stopped for a search at Domdomia check post of BGB 2 Teknaf Battalion. During the search, the behavior of a 55-year-old female passenger seemed suspicious. The female BGB members on duty at the checkpoint then questioned and searched the woman. During the search, 4,740 yaba tablets were found hidden in a snack bag she was carrying, using a clever concealment method.
Lt Coloner Mohiuddin said the detained woman was handed over to Teknaf Police Station. Legal procedure is underway regarding the two incident. The BGB is fully active in preventing drug smuggling. Their operations to eliminate drugs will continue in the border areas.
