The border guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel in Moheshpur frontier in Jhenaidah have arrested a gold smuggler with huge gold bars from Matila Banshbagan area about 200 yard inside the Bangladesh territory from bordering pillar number 52/18 R on Wednesday morning.
The weight of the seized 40 gold bars was 4,665 grams and the primarily estimated price was over Tk 4.6 crore.
The arrested gold smuggler was identified as Rimon Hossain, 20, son of Hazrat Ali of village Matia in same bordering upazila, said the BGB sources.
BGB 58 battalion director Lt Col Masud Parvez Rana in a press release, had said, acting on a tip off, two groups of BGB personnel, led by battalion director Lt Col Masud Parvez Rana and deputy director Major Mahmudul Hasan ambushed two separate places in the bamboo cluster area owned by Shahidul Master at Matila at about 8.20 am. Sensing the presence of the BGB men, the said smuggler leaving his sachet tried to enter in to neighboring India taking the advantages of the foggy weather.
The BGB men caught him and seized the abandoned sachet from the maize plot.
The BGB was preparing to file a case with Moheshpur police station and hand over the seized gold bars with Jhenaidah treasury office, said BGB battalion director lieutenant Colonel Masud Parvez Rana.
