Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) detained a smuggler with three pieces of gold bars from Tujulpur area of Satkhira on Sunday, while he was trying to smuggle the gold bars to India.
The detainee was identified as Jahangir Hossain Swapon, 51, son of Nurul Haque, resident ofg Rayerbagh village in Rayerbagh Thana of Dhaka.
Commander of BGB 33 Satkhira Battalion, Lieutenant Commander Ashraful Haque, confirmed the matter through a press release at 12:00pm on Sunday.
The three gold bars weighed 473.12 grams, with a market price of Tk 57,78,870.
Lt Commander Ashraful Haque said they received a tip-off that golds are being carried in a Satkhira bound bus of MR Sleeper Transport coming from Dhaka, with the intention of taking the gold to Tujulpur border area to smuggle them to India. Acting on the tip-off a BGB team led by contable Mezbah Uddin, member of Toluigachha SIP, conducted a drive in that area.
Later they searched the bus and detained smuggler Jahangir Hossain from the bus. Three gold bars and two cellphones were seized from his possession at that time. The gold bars were hidden in a special way inside his shoes.
He also said the smuggler was handed over to Koloroa police station and the seized gold were kept in Satkhira Treasury office.
