Members of the Border Guard Bangladesh's (BGB) 58 Battalion detained two smugglers with 5.5 kilograms of 46 gold bars from the Maheshpur border region in Jhenaidah on Monday evening.
The detainees were identified as Abdul Kader Mandal, 60, son of Rajab Ali Mandal of village Chhoyghoria in Moheshpur upazila, and Dulal Hossain, 55, son of Eear Hossain of the area.
BGB 58 battalion director’s office sources said they were informed that a number of gold smugglers with huge flat bars of gold were marching towards the border area at Samonta in the evening of Monday.
Acting on tip-off, a contingent of the BGB men took position in the area to nab the smugglers. The gold smugglers tried to flee upon seeing the BGB patrol team. At that time, the BGB personnel detained two of them.
BGB seized 46 gold bars weighting 5.478 grams of gold, amounting to Tk six crore.
The BGB sources said they handed over the detainee to Moheshpur police station and deposited the seized gold bars at the Jhenaidah government treasury as per the rules.
