Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on two separate drives detained two Rohingyas along with 100,000 pieces of yaba pills from the border area near Naf River in Teknaf upazila of Cox's Bazar's on Monday.
Lieutenant Colonel Md Mohiuddin Ahmed, Commander of BGB Teknaf 2 Battalion confirmed the matter in a press release on Monday.
The detainees are identified as Rafiq Mia, 42, and Ruhul Amin, 25. Both of them are resident of Nagpura area under Mongdu Thana in Rakhaine state of Myanmar.
Lt Col Mohiuddin Ahmed said acting on a tip-off that a large drug shipment being smuggled from Myanmar, a BGB team conducted a drive in Shoshanghat area under Hnila union in Teknaf upazila on early Monday. At one point, the BGB members noticed two men carrying a bag was crossing the Naf River and coming toward the shore. When they were told to stop, they attempted to flee. The BGB members chased them down and successfully detained them.
Later, they searched the bag carried by the detainees and recovered 50,000 pieces yaba pills.
Meanwhile, the BGB reported that in a separate drive, 50,000 pieces yaba tablets were recovered while being smuggled through the Unchiprang point of the Naf River at Whykong union in Teknaf, also on early Monday.
Regarding this, Lt Col Md Mohiuddin Ahmed said that BGB members spotted two suspicious men approaching from the Myanmar side through the Unchiprang point of the Naf River in Teknaf at early morning. When they were told to stop, they noticed the presence of the BGB members and fled into the darkness.
He further said a case was filed against the two detainees at Teknaf police station. The yaba pills seized during the separate drives were kept at the BGB battalion headquarters.
