Bangladesh Coast Guard (BCG) is working to raise public awareness among fishermen and fish traders during the 'Mother Hilsa Conservation Campaign-2024.'
The Media Officer of Bangladesh Coast Guard Headquarters Lieutenant Commander Khandaker Munif Taqi informed the matter through a press release on Tuesday.
He said that various measures were taken to protect mother hilsa during the breeding season of hilsa fish. In this regard, fishing, transportation, storage, marketing, and buying and selling of hilsa will be prohibited nationwide for a total of 22 days during the main breeding season, from October 13 to November 3, 2024 as per the Protection and Conservation of Fish Act 1950. On this occasion, the Bangladesh Coast Guard west zone is playing an active role in implementing the 'Mother Hilsa Conservation Campaign-2024. The Coast Guard west zone is conducting campaigns through various means, including distributing leaflets, posting posters, and making announcements via loudspeakers to raise public awareness among fishermen and fish traders. Patrolling activities are ongoing in the rivers under the jurisdiction of the Bangladesh Coast Guard west zone on Tuesday. Additionally, the patrolling ships of the Bangladesh Coast Guard are continuously on duty to prevent fishing trawlers from neighboring countries from entering Bangladesh's territorial waters.
He also said Bangladesh Coast Guard west zone will continue patrolling around the clock to protect 'Mother Hilsa' in the fish sanctuaries of the coastal and river areas under the jurisdiction of the Bangladesh Coast Guard.
