BCG, BGB strengthen patrol, surveillance in Cox’s Bazar

Bangladesh Coast Guard (BCG) and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) strengthened patrolling and surveillance to prevent Rohingya people from illegally entering the country using Naikhongcchari and Teknaf border and maritime boundary in Cox’s Bazar.

Meanwhile, five more bodies were rescued in connection with the incident where a boat carrying Rohigyas capsized recently. They were trying to enter Bangladesh illegally through sea route. A total of 19 bodies were recovered in two days till now. Among them, there are seven women, three men and nine children.

Bodies of two children were recovered from Khurermukh area under Sabrang union in Teknaf Upazila around 8:30 pm on Tuesday and body of a man was recovered at the same time from Noakhalipara sea beach. Bodies of two more children were recovered on Wednesday that washed ashore at Baharchoraghat beach of Sabrang union.

Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Adnan Chowdhury confirmed the matter.

He said a total of 19 bodies were recovered on Tuesday and Wednesday. Measures were taken to bury them in the respective areas as unidentified bodies. 

Meanwhile, the local representatives said many Rohingyas illegally entered the country through Teknaf border in the last three days. The local representatives, who were unwilling to disclose their names, said although many Rohingyas trickily entered the camp after illegally coming to the country by boats from various points, BGB detained more than two hundred of them. They were kept under BGB custody.

Bangladesh Coast Guard strengthened patrolling and surveillance at Shahporir Dwip estuary to prevent Rohingyas from illegally entering the country. Moreover, BGB patrolling was increased at Naikhongcchari, Ukhiya and Teknaf land border.

Media Officer of Bangladesh Coast Guard head quarter Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujan said in a press release on Wednesday that BCG patrolling at the sea was strengthened.

He said Bangladesh Coast Guard is maintaining strict surveillance at Bangladesh-Myanmar border due to the ongoing conflict in the neighbouring country Myanmar. Patrolling was strengthened in Teknaf, Shahporir Dwip, Baharchara, Saint Martin’s Island and coastal areas to prevent any illegal activities in Naf River and Saint Martin’s Island areas that might be conducted using the ongoing situation. Bangladesh Coast Guard is conducting surveillance regularly by using high speed boats and deploying patrol ships in the sea regularly.

He also said the situation is being monitored all the time by deploying additional manpower and equipment in Teknaf, Shahporir Dwip, Baharchara and Saint Martin’s Island. Bangladesh Coast Guard is fully prepared to face any kind of situation and ensure public safety, he added.
