Bangaldesh Cricket Board (BCB) still hopes to organize the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, as it has written to the Army Chief on Thursday seeking security assurance to be the host of the tournament scheduled for October.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh has been rocked by anti-government agitations over the last few weeks and following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's departure from the country, several board directors, including BCB president Nazmul Hassan, were also forced to leave Bangladesh given they were backed by Hasina's party, Awami League.
So, under this awkward circumstances, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has been closely monitoring the situation in Bangladesh and has even informally jotted down alternative venues for the Women’s World Cup.
The UAE, India and Sri Lanka are in the shortlist to be back-up venues in case the ICC would be forced to shift the tournament out of Bangladesh.
Ther 18 days of the World Cup scheduled to take place at two venues in Bangladesh - the Sher-e- Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka and the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium in Sylhet
But it was learnt that the ICC may before taking a decision on the venue of the tournament after assessing the conditions on-ground in Bangladesh by August 10 (today.
However, some other board directors are in Dhaka and retain hope with hosting the women’s cricket Extravaganza.
Iftekhar Ahmed Mithu, BCB's Umpire Committee chairman, informed the media that they were trying hosts the tournament and sent a letter to the Army Chief regarding assurance about the security.
“Aas we have only two months in hand and there are not too many among us present in the country, we have sent a letter to the Army Chief on Thursday (August 8) regarding assurance about the security of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup,” Mithu told the news portal Cricbuzz on Thursday.
Mithu alos informed that the ICC communicated with them two days back and they replied that we will come back to them shortly.
Meanwhile, on Thursday, Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus-led interim government was appointed to run the country's affairs till fresh elections are conducted after the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina left the country.
