In a significant overhaul, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has undergone a leadership change, with former national captain Faruque Ahmed taking the helm. The move comes amidst a broader reform effort within the interim government.
Ahmed has vowed to prioritise constitutional reform, ensuring that the BCB operates on a more transparent and accountable framework. He has also pledged to maintain a hands-off approach to team selection, allowing selectors to operate independently.
A Politics-Free BCB
Ahmed stressed the importance of a "politics-free" environment within the BCB, emphasizing that the board should be driven solely by the interests of Bangladesh cricket. He acknowledged past shortcomings but expressed optimism about the potential for a brighter future.
"We have to rebuild this system," he said. "There have been
external pressures, but I'm determined to create a robust and fair structure."
Constitutional Reform and Director Elections
The president outlined plans to review and amend the BCB's constitution, with a focus on ensuring that only those truly passionate about cricket hold positions of power. He emphasized the need for a "fair and transparent" election process for board directors.
No Interference in Team Selection
Ahmed firmly dismissed any allegations of interference in team selection during his previous tenure, stating that his resignation was a direct result of his opposition to such practices. He clarified that board policies should not be confused with party selection policies.
Conflict of Interest and Vice-Presidential Election
The president addressed concerns about potential conflicts of interest, assuring that he would maintain a clear separation between his role as BCB chairman and any personal business ventures. He also announced plans to hold a vice-presidential election to strengthen the board's leadership.
Institutional Structure and Local Coaches
Ahmed expressed his desire to establish a strong institutional structure within the BCB, fostering a culture of excellence and promoting long-term success. He also praised the contributions of local coaches but emphasized the need for a comprehensive evaluation process.
Player Conduct and Organizational Balance
The president acknowledged the challenges of managing player conduct and ensuring a balanced approach between cricketers and organizers. He stressed the importance of clear guidelines and enforcement mechanisms to maintain discipline and harmony within the BCB.
