Shakib Al Hasan has expressed his desire to retire after playing the Test match against South Africa at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur this October. However, concerns about his return to Bangladesh due to security issues have cast a shadow over his plans.
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Faruque Ahmed stated on Monday, "Shakib has a good chance of coming to Bangladesh and retiring." He mentioned that he has been in contact with Shakib, who is keen on retiring in his home country. Previously, during a press conference before the second and final Test of the series against India in Kanpur, Shakib had announced his intention to retire after the South Africa series in Mirpur. However, security concerns, particularly the fear of arrest upon his return, have complicated matters. The BCB is currently in discussions with the interim government to address these issues. Faruque Ahmed clarified that the BCB is unable to provide security for Shakib as they do not have their own security forces. Sports advisor Asif Mahmud emphasised the need to ensure Shakib's safety but acknowledged the difficulty in providing security for MP Shakib. Nonetheless, Mahmud assured that all necessary measures would be taken to protect Shakib.
The BCB president remarked, "I can't speak on the legal procedures. I am just a board president. The matter of Shakib must be addressed at the government level. As I mentioned earlier, there are law enforcement agencies, advisers, and chief advisers who will take overall responsibility.
We can manage his security within the stadium, on the field, and at the practice grounds."
Bangladesh are set to commence their series against South Africa on October 21 in Mirpur.
BCB president said immediately after the incident that it is not possible for them to provide security to Shakib. Because they don't have their own security forces. Sports advisor Asif Mahmud said that the safety of cricketer Shakib has to be ensured. But it is difficult to provide security to MP Shakib. Later, however, the sports advisor said that they will take all measures to protect Shakib.
